SoMa

The area is dotted with upscale dining options and high-energy nightclubs.

Welcome to SoMa

SoMa, or South of Market, is a vast, warehouse-filled district. It encompasses Mission Bay and South Beach, where the Giants play baseball at waterfront Oracle Park. Surrounding Yerba Buena Gardens is an arts center, the sleek convention complex Moscone Center, and several museums, including the acclaimed San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). The area is dotted with upscale dining options and high-energy nightclubs.

The South of Market area was once a place of warehouses and tumbleweeds, not necessarily in that order. Completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, SOMA became a center of industry, with the construction of the Bay Bridge and Interstate 101 subsequently taking out large areas of the district.

It was the development of The Embarcadero in the 1950s that brought a new era to SOMA, which grew to become a center for the gay population. Then decades later, the concentration of bars and nightclubs in the area gave it a new lease on life – nightlife, that is.

Transformation of the area continued during the 2000s, with the Transbay Terminal Replacement Project plus many new high-rise residential apartment buildings such as One Rincon Hill, 300 Spear Street, and Millennium Tower taking shape. Interested in any of these? I’m the person you want to contact. I’m the local SOMA expert and can help you get into any one of these communities.

Best SOMA Apartments

In addition to One Rincon, 300 Spear, and the Millennium Tower mentioned above, there are a slew of other excellent apartment options in SOMA. These include The Paramount Luxury Apartments, Edgewater, NEMA San Francisco, 923 Folsom Street, and Solaire. Amenities are many and typically include high-speed internet, private patios or balconies, higher-than-average ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows (to take in the view!), stainless steel appliances, and other high-end finishes. Again, if you’re interested in any of these, or in SOMA in general, I’m more than happy to help – give me a call!

SOMA Neighborhood Guide

It’s hard to find a neighborhood that’s better connected to transit than SOMA. Whether you’re looking to hop on the freeway, catch a BART train, or get a bus, you’re in the right place. There are several BART stations within walking distance – Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, and Civic Center –and the new Transbay Terminal is nearing completion on Fremont Street.

A few of some of the hottest local restaurants include:

Also a shout out to HRD Restaurant – the only place I’ve ever encountered an oyster burrito. If you haven’t experienced it for yourself, I encourage you to run, not walk to this small joint. The lines are long, but they move quickly.
